Costa Rica SUP Surf Coaching Trip

My trip to the Maldives was amazing! Everything exceeded my expectations starting with brilliant surf coaching from Beau Nixon. An onboard photographer made this possible with catching all our waves for feedback. Each day we were treated with plentiful yummy food. Between surfs we had the opportunity to learn from Clare a marine biologist both on our vessel then in the water. As a surfer I found it exciting snorkelling beside Clare as she pointed out the 100’s of different fish and several black tip sharks. I loved my trip and will be back next year. Before I booked this trip, I was a little apprehensive about what I was letting myself in for. That is, spending ten days on a boat with a bunch of strangers and surfing in unfamiliar surroundings that may be beyond my capabilities.
After one day into the trip, I needn’t have worried. I found myself amongst friendly like minded people who wanted just what I wanted, to improve and have a good time surfing in a beautiful environment. That and having an expert to guide and help us develop into better surfers. Knowing Beau was there, showing us the best lineup position, dangers and local knowledge was invaluable, as well as on the spot guidance was of tremendous benefit to my improvement. Anyone who wants to progress in SUP surfing in a beautiful part of the world, make new friends, learn about the marine life and environment as well as fabulous food needs to book this trip of a lifetime.

I would 100% recommend coaching from Beau and Travel with a Paddle to any SUP surfer. I feel like I’ve gone up a level across the board in technique, awareness, reading the conditions, etiquette in the line-up and just having a load of fun doing it.

Beau is a really knowledgeable coach. His approach during the SUP clinic really helped to identify areas where I can improve my technique.

Beau is an amazing coach who can make you feel confident by recognising your abilities but knows when to guide you in the right direction. His professional attitude to bringing out the best in you, which he shares amongst the group equally makes you feel confident. He sits or paddles in the water and definitely takes notes on how you’re performing and then gives you the right pointers to work on. It was a nice personal touch that his dad was the cameraman and did an amazing job filming everyone considering how far away we were. The video analysis and coaching session was far the best I’ve ever had that I learnt so much about my style and SUP surfing also from watching the others and hearing Beau tips for them to improve. …

We had such a fun trip with great people from all corners of the world enjoying Beau’s coaching and Clare’s incredible marine knowledge. This wonderful couple are perfect hosts. Everything done without fuss and in ways that were sympathetic to the pristine environment around us. Clare took us on a number of snorkelling expeditions and worked at a very professional level, conducting a detailed briefing before each dive. Her knowledge of the reefs and the marine life was impressive and she had a very keen eye for anything hiding/camouflaged and was quick to point it out for anyone interested. Even though she was keeping a keen eye on what was in the water and sharing her knowledge you could see that the safety of everyone she was guiding was at the forefront of her mind, constantly checking the position of everyone and explaining the currents and locations we needed to head towards to keep out of trouble.

Travel With A Paddle made our trip to the Maldives everything we expected and more. They made the entire process smooth and easy from start to finish. Beau was very knowledgeable on all the breaks around and informed us of our options each day. Once arriving at the break he would give a detailed briefing on the do’s and do nots. He was always on the lookout for everyone in his crew and was quick to assist anyone that placed themselves in a sticky situation. If you are looking at booking a surf charter to the Maldives this is the one you want.

The Maldives liveaboard trip with Beau and Clare was superb. Been lucky enough to enjoy some amazing trips in my life, but this was unbeatable and world-class. Great waves, tuition, video coaching, educational snorkelling with mantas and an array of marine life and a fabulous and adaptable schedule. Their attention to detail and dealing with any questions and anticipating needs was first-class. Their combined knowledge its unparalleled in terms of offering a combination of world-class SUP surf training and marine biology / conservation education. Joined a great small group and had lots of fun and Beau and Clare were the perfect hosts. Cannot recommend using Travel with a Paddle enough. Will defo be back for more! Huge thanks!

Beau from Travel with a Paddle, put together an outstanding trip, and managed to consistantly put us on epic waves. Made sure entire crew was sorted with right and left breaks and covered the surfers and SUPs extremely well. Shot for a Great trip

Beau’s humble gentle nature was very refreshing. His deep knowledge of the sea, tides, winds and swell was key and he made sure the boat was in the right place at the right time. I will always make sure Beau is on my boat.

10 days spent surfing in the central atolls of the Maldives! uncrowded waves in the most remote areas! added to this, was Travel with a Paddle amazing service and hospitality! Who could have asked for more! Just an amazing trip and A great way to spend 10 days with your mates!

This was by far the best surf trip I’ve ever been on. Beau was incredible and gave us such awesome insight and tips. Beau and Clare need to be commended for their organizational skills, knowledge, experience and going beyond and above for the customer at all times to make sure we had a fantastic experience. I felt very supported when going out of my comfort zone and pushing my SUP Surfing boundaries – Beau was always there to take care of us and encouraging our progress. I really enjoyed the extensive knowledge that Clare had for the marine environment in the Maldives and time spent in the water with her snorkeling. One of the best holidays I’ve had. The surfing was incredible and I came back so much improved. Aside from being amongst guests that share a similar passion for SUPing, and learning from one of the very best SUP surfers on the planet, our hosts Beau and Clare were absolutely exemplary in every way. Patient, friendly, accommodating and just great fun to be with! Be in no doubt that your SUP surfing ability will improve tremendously through Beau’s careful coaching. And you’ll learn the names of every reef creature imaginable on Clare’s snorkelling adventures. How can a trip get better than this!!

I’ve just come back from a weekends SUP clinic and I can’t praise Beau and his team highly enough. Saturday saw us surfing at a local break, followed by a post session analysis and Sunday had been planned to be an epic downwinder. Beau went above and beyond to make sure this would run smoothly. Unfortunately the forecast didn’t pan out as expected, but that was no problem. Plan b was put in place and we had an amazing day. I can only imagine the effort that was put in behind the scenes to rearrange everything as transport was reorganised for us and we were picked up/dropped off from a completely different location as if by magic. Again. Thank you. Such a memorable weekend.

My first ever surf lesson was with Beau in Costa Rica. He had me standing up and riding small waves within the first hour!!

His patience and clear instructions were perfect for a beginner like myself. I have since surfed with Beau in Wales and the Maldives and without his help I wouldn’t be the keen surfer I am today.

Beau is an incredibly talented, kind and above all patient teacher. I’ve been lucky enough to surf with him twice, first at Peninsula Papagayo in Costa Rica, then in Gili Lankanfushi in The Maldives. I’m a novice surfer so it was great to be taken to a break which suited my ability – as well as my ambition – and where I could really get my confidence. Beau’s instruction was absolutely invaluable and I can’t wait for next time.

Beau managed everything right down to the finest detail even ensuring our boards were unpacked, checked for dings and repaired prior to our first surf!
